According to a recent research about BPS, this polycarbonate mixture might be potentially more harmful than its controversial predecessor—Bisphenol A (BPA).

PLOS Genes recently published a report, titled “Contact with the BPA alternative, BPS, might cause mutations in the reproductive cells”, concluding that damage to the embryo cells could be done when the concentration of BPS is lower than that of BPA.

Researchers from The University of California – Los Angeles, tested both BPA and BPS with concentrations similar to those typically found in the human body on Nematodes. The result is, the group of Nematodes which had contact with BPS and BPA has lower reproductive rates than the control group. In which, relative to BPA, lower concentrations of BPS are required for the damage to take effect.

The report states, “The result shows that, in terms of reproductive impacts, BPS may not be a safe alternative to BPA”. It also states that; BPS may even have a greater impact on the endocrine system compared to BPA.

Products that contains BPS usually also states “No BPA”, theoretically telling customers to not worry about this controversial and probably harmful chemical.

Although the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) declares that BPA is safe to the human body, the general public is still worried about this potentially dangerous chemical. Other groups continue to pressure the plastics industry into seeking new and safe alternatives.
