The Specialty Plastics Division of Eastman Chemical Company believes that “Made in America” and “Safety” are the keywords helping the company to achieve success in China.
At the press conference prior to the Chinaplas 2016 in Shanghai, Randy Beavers, Regional Business Director Asia Pacific & Global Sales Director of Eastman Specialty Plastics, said that since the introduction in 2007, the Tritan copolyester of Eastman had seen continuously rapid growth and had “triggered various possibilities” in the Asia Pacific market and global market.
He said that Eastman trained partner retailers around the world about the values of a variety of plastic materials. “At the end of product sales, what retailers look forward to are good comments instead of product return. In our retailer training, we tell them what characteristics of plastic materials could lead to sales returns and customer complaints”.
He presented the customer comments on the website of Amazon; among the juicers with five-star excellent comments, 85% were made from Tritan copolyester and only 14% were from polycarbonate.
“As a material, Tritan is famous for its strength and heat resistance,” Beavers said, “Tritan is a material with excellent chemical resistance. It has low internal stress and it offers excellent chemical resistance which protects it from chemical erosion.”
In the North America market, due to the characteristics of heat resistance and stiffness, Tritan is regarded as an ideal material for water bottles and catering utensils. “Prior to Tritan, Eastman did not find a polymer which could bear the washing of dishwasher.”
However, dishwasher is not as popular in China as in America. Therefore, the company makes more emphasis on the safety of Tritan, “The demands on Tritan will be increased with consumers’ pursuit of higher standards of living.”
He said, “The new cooperation established between Midea and Eastman serves as a good case. ” Recently, the two companies decided to engage in joint promotion. Midea will print Tritan trademark on the new high-end juicer machines and blenders. Midea hopes, with the joint promotion and the use of Tritan trademark, to guide consumers to choose a healthier and sustainable lifestyle; and at the same time, to strengthen its leading position in the market of small appliances.
Beavers said the reason for Midea to choose Tritan from Eastman was that “Made in America” and product safety can both greatly appeal to consumer. He said that the selling proposition of Tritan was its holistic characteristics in safety instead of only BPA-free. “In baby products, BPA-free has already become a standard. However in the home goods market, BPA-free is not as attractive in China as that in the US and European market.”
As to safety, what Beavers refers to is the overall safety. “We will show the users that we will monitor the safety of materials throughout the entire value chain.”
