Global passenger car production increase and automobile lightweight trend are driving the demand for automotive plastics. Of all the automotive plastics, polypropylene accounts for up to 37%; Followed by polyurethane 17.3%; ABS resin 12.3%; composite materials 11.5%; high density polyethylene 10.8%; polycarbonate 6.8%; polymethyl methacrylate 4.4%. In 2012, Asia-Pacific region became the biggest market of the world’s automotive plastics, accounting for 50.5%; Europe was the second 28%, North America 11.3% and the rest of the world 10.1%. The global passenger car production is expected to increase to 94.4 million by 2018 from 63.1 million in 2012, an average annual growth rate of 6.9%. In the same period, Asia Pacific region is the key driver of the industry, with annual growth rate of 8.6%. The global automotive plastic consumption is expected to increase to 11.3 million tons by 2018 from 7.1 million tons in 2012, an average annual growth rate of 8%.
Automotive plastics are widely used in interior and exterior decoration, hood and other parts. Plastic parts are conductive to reduce weight. They also beautify automobile, control vibration and noise, and contribute to automobile body heat insulation.
