Nylon is mainly used for automotive engine and its peripheral components. The main products in these applications includethe GFPA6, GFPA66, and flame retardant PA6.
1. Applications around theengine peripheral position require excellent performance against heat and vibration. Glass fiber reinforced nylon is ideal for these applications. Nylon has an outstanding overall performance. With glass fiber reinforcement, it shows further improvement in strength, precision, and dimension stability. In addition, nylon is easier to recycle and reuse; its price is relatively cheaper – all factors making nylon an ideal choice for material used in and around an engine.
BMW of Germany, in 1990, was the first to use glass reinforced nylon inits air intakemanifold of the six-cylinder engine. After that, Ford and DuPont jointly developed similar glass reinforced nylonPA66 for V6 engine. These successful applications were then followed by many car companies.
2. Applications are plenty. The cover and decorative cover of engine, the housing for cylinder head and other components are generally ideal applications for modified nylon. This helps reduce the weight by 50% and even the cost by 30%. In addition to engine parts, other components subject to strong mechanical force may also consider the use of reinforced nylon; for example, oil filters, wipers and radiator grilles among many more.
