Due to labor disputes, trucks shortage, high volume of goods and other factors, Los Angeles, CA, and Long Beach,CA, the two largest ports in the West Coast of the United States, were gridlocked. A large number of Asian imported products were stranded.
Some companies have to divert freight to other ports in Washington state, located in the north.
Officials of the US Toys Industry Association, told Plastics News that it caused serious loss to the toys industry, and even hurt the relationship between the toys and retail industries.
80% of the $22 billion toys sales in the US market is from Asia. Of the whole year, approximately half of the sales takes place during the peak shopping season right before Christmas. It is extremely destructive that this logistic problem happened in such a critical moment.
More US companies even transported the goods through the ports in Canada, which affected the local ports operation.
Last year, toys imported to the US filled up 785,000 containers, sized 20-foot. Among them, about 86% came from China (including Hong Kong). Half of these toys were shipped through Los Angeles and Long Beach. In addition, the ports in New York / New Jersey handled about 10% of the imported toys.
