The latest iPhone 5c model, recently launched at the Apple Inc. autumn conference, is using polycarbonate material for the first time ever, marking the further expansion of engineering plastics into the field of electronics. In recent years, polycarbonates, representative of the top five engineering plastics because of its good performance, have gradually widened applications, not limited to electronics alone.
In the design concept of automotive lightweighting, compared to conventional metallic materials, new high-end engineering plastics and modified plastics will further replace metals, primarily because they can reduce the weight of vehicles by 30%-40%. Also, because of its superior mechanical properties, plastic applications have gradually expanded into medical devices, from conventional transfusion tubes to today’s high-pressure syringes, surgical masks, oxygenator housing for heart bypass surgery and much, much more.
Engineering plastics are no longer limited to the aerospace industry and other high-end material markets, but they have gradually become a part of our everyday lives, from electronics and automobile manufacturing to pharmaceuticals and construction. With non-stop research and development, the outlook is bright and its applications will reach ever further.
