DSM Group successfully developed a number of advanced thermoplastic composites by implanting various continuous fiber reinforced materials into its polyamide series. These new composites will primarily be used in the automotive industry for customized structural and semi-structural product solutions.
Based on DSM’s EcoPaXX PA410, Akulon PA6 and Stanyl PA46carbon fiber composite, the overall weight of a vehicle’s body and chassis parts can be significantly reduced, while glass fiber reinforced composites are mainly used to reduce the weight of semi-structural components. Lightweight automotive components can effectively improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emission.
At present, DSM has already joined the EU ENLIGHT Project, and this four-year project is designed to help achieve a weight reduction for medium and high-emission electric vehicles to be launched from 2020-2025. Project partners include a number of well-known automakers such as Jaguar, Renault, Volkswagen and Volvo.
In addition, DSM is also working with the Aachen Center for Integrative Lightweight Production (AZL)to develop high-performance thermoplastic composites to promote the automated production of high-load, cost-optimized lightweight components, making them suitable for mass production and more capable of performing the various processing of composite material and multi-material designs.
