Application of PET in the field of beverage packaging accelerates the development of beverage packaging industry. PET is the product of condensation between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. It is a saturated thermoplastic polymer. PET molecule has both linear and semi-crystalline state. The simplest process to produce PET is from the reaction of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol. The reaction produces monomers (ester), then goes through a condensation reaction to form long chain PET polymer. The level of polymerization depends on temperature and pressure.
PET, like many other plastics, goes through three states during processing, namely glassy state, high elastic state, and viscous flow state. These states correspond to glass transition temperature Tg, crystallization temperature Tc, and melting point Tf.
