A thermoplastic seat pan structure developed by BASF has greatly contributed to the light weighting of the automotive industry, for which it won the first Altair Enlighten Award.
This type of thermoplastic composite seat pan replaces the metal structure used in GM Opel Astra sold in the EU for a weight reduction of 45%. This component adopts both Ultramid polyamide resins and glass reinforced materials. The seat pan, produced through injection molding and over molding weighs only 0.8kg, while its metallic counterpart weighs 1.5kg.
