Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) America has expanded its plastics certification program which added some new tests.
UL will use restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) and non-halogenated ratings. Both ratings aim to provide a simple way to find plastics that meet RoHS or non-halogen requirements.
RoHS rating will ensure that the content of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plastics are below legal limits.
There are two parts in non-halogenated ratings – one testing for fluorine, chlorine and bromine; the other testing only for chlorine and bromine.
Todd-Denison, the vice president and general manager of UL Performance Materials, said,” This will help manufacturers reduce testing, and allows users to easily validate the ratings of UL’s certification database.”
